Projects and Testimonials

For a number years I have been enthusiastically building websites, originally with inelegant but effective HTML. (I probably even used <frameset> once.) Gradually, as my self-taught skills grew, I began using CSS, PHP, MySQL and JavaScript, eventually creating some indepth, bespoke content management systems. I have also dabbled with Drupal.

By combining an insatiable interest for these technologies with an acceptable eye for design and a very keen eye for detail I have developed a broad range of skills and a number of projects that I'm proud of. Most recently I have begun to learn about the model-view-controller architecture using the CodeIgniter framework.

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church

As a member of this large church in Northampton I have worked on the website for a number of years, gradually expanding the functionality of the site over time with features including content management, calendars, blogs, sermon streaming, members area and more.

University of Manchester Hiking Club

One of the university's most active societies, the Hiking Club organise trips from Manchester to places like Snowdonia and the Lake District. As elected Website Secretary and working with other committee members I have expanded the front-end features of the site and implemented back-end administrative features as well as a consolidation of the content and reimplementing the site using MVC architecture.

James Hornsby

A very small site for an actor wanting the ability to update the site himself and needing a very simple and user friendly interface. This was a voluntary undertaking and served well as an opportunity to explore the MVC architecture.

"Nic Garner has designed a superbly crafted website for me. His knowledge, expertise, creativity, insight and patience were all hugely appreciated. Nic was able to design the website exactly as I had envisaged it and I find it accessible and easy to update. Nic has also provided a great support. I would not hesitate to recommend Nic to anyone who is looking to use his undoubted talents."

The Stompers

This was another small, MVC project undertaken for a client with whom I worked for as a volunteer when they were working as the Students' Union Activities Officer.

Pangaea Festival

The Pangaea Festivals are student-led, non-profit events held twice a year, at the end of each exam period. As such the sites are simple and short-lived and are more about my design skills than my technical skills, taking design elements from supplied artwork for inspiration.

"Nic has really done some incredible things with our website! In addition to being reliable in meeting our requests, Nic has worked with us to innovate and improve our website. His understandings of website usability, and how to reach a target market have been extremely valuable to our organisation. We hope to continue to work with Nic in the future!"

Northampton Bible Festival

This site was part of a larger project I worked on which also included the design of the main logo and a series of posters for the various events of the festival, available for download on the Resources page.
